La Costeña
Authentic Taqueria & Pupuseria
Upon first glimpse, La Costeña blends into the many other ordinary store fronts and strip malls that line Wade Hampton Boulevard. If you’re feeling like you’re missing the truly authentic Mexican food and are honestly tired of the white cheese sauce that dominates the South’s version of Mexican cuisine, this is the place to try.

Ernesto Corona has owned La Costeña for 4 years after moving to Greenville from Newark, NJ. Like many, he moved to Greenville to enjoy a more affordable lifestyle. With a lifetime of experience working in the kitchen for others (Carraba’s, Olive Garden, and Longhorn Steak House), this was Ernesto’s first chance to own and cook his authentic Mexican food for the community.
“Every Sunday when you live in south Texas, you have fresh tortillas with fresh barbacoa (beef cheek). The meat is extra fatty which makes it moister with lots of flavor. You eat it with a fresh tortilla and salt. You can taste that he actually makes the tortillas here.” explains Monica G.
Ernesto fills the pupusas with your choice of filling. Try the local favorite, chicharrones with cheese. Not as daring? Play it safe with refried beans and cheese.
A variety of grilled meats are available including:
Al pastor = marinated pork
Pollo = chicken
Barbacoa aka cabeza = beef cheek
Carnitas = marinated pork
Chorizo = spicy sausage
Asada = beef
Lengua = beef tongue
We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh TACOS: Al pastor, asada, beef cabeza, and a personal favorite, carnitas. Don't fear the cilantro... it may taste like soap to some, but it's a vital part of the flavor profile. Squeeze on a little lime juice for the full experience.
QUE RICO!
Who doesn't like tequila? Ernesto's favorite is reposado. And no, brand does not matter.
The pupusas are highly addictive warm. They're topped with homemade cabbage salad and red sauce.
Great food for a great price.
Download your translator app and give it a try. While you're here, say hi to Oscar. You won't be sorry.
Greenville continues to grow and so does it's ethnic food scene. There are plenty of interesting places to experience new flavors, whether they are traditional or a new interpretation of the classic.
It's our hope at OTGG that you'll step out of the box and try something new. Plus we love to support thriving local businesses. #supportlocal
